David Archuleta brings his holiday spirit to the Wellmont

“American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta heads to the Wellmont Theatre on Sunday promoting his Christmas album, “Christmas From The Heart.” The album works to capture both Archuleta’s cheerful personality and undeniable vocal talent. Archuleta has proven himself dedicated to singing, being famed for overcoming vocal paralysis before starting his whirlwind of success on “American Idol.”

His progression would continue after the show with his popular self-titled debut album. The album featured “Crush,” a song that would hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts. Not surprisingly, both of his parents have musical backgrounds and were an inspiration to the young Archuleta, who is now only 18 years of age.

DILLON RAND: I’m sure everyone asks you about “American Idol” and what the experience was like. What questions are you sick of answering by now?

DAVID ARCHULETA: I wouldn’t say I am sick of hearing any of them. I mean, a lot of people ask me if Simon is mean. He is actually a nice guy who is just doing his job as a judge. He can get pretty blunt in doing his job, but he is a nice guy in person.

DILLON: Your most popular song has been “Crush,” which boasts a chorus “I know this crush ain’t going away.” Who was this crush on and has it gone away yet?

DAVID: Well I didn’t actually write the song so I didn’t have anyone particular in mind when it was being written. I don’t really have anyone that I have a crush on right now either. I really feel like I have been married to music. I mean, I don’t feel old enough to be married to anything, but I guess you could say I am married to music. That is the thing I have been focusing on. It’s fun to go on dates, I just haven’t done a lot of it! Maybe next year there will be a time when I can focus more on that. But I don’t know. I have not been focused on anything like that lately. So no crushes right now!

DILLON: So I’m guessing the focus has instead been the tour and the next album. What can you tell me about the upcoming album?

DAVID: Well now that the Christmas album is done and the Christmas tour has already started, the next focus will be writing for the next album. I think I will be starting to get into that in January, so next month already, I will really start to focus in on writing songs, and I am looking forward to getting a hold of other people and writing with them.

DILLON: I recently read a review of a show from this tour in which the reporter wrote that your rendition of “Ave Maria” moved them and everyone else in the audience to tears. That’s quite a compliment!

DAVID: That has just been a really special song to sing and I feel like it’s a really reverent one. It is about someone who was really special. You know, the Virgin Mother, Mary. It’s interesting because I wasn’t even going to keep it in the show. I almost didn’t put it in the show because it was so hard to sing and I didn’t want it to be a letdown every night. I would feel horrible doing that. I told myself I was going to try it for the first two shows in Utah and then just drop it from there. But I just enjoyed singing it so much and felt that it was such a special song. I knew it was a hard song to sing but told myself I was going to try and go for it anyway. And I am really happy about that. I am happy that people have appreciated it, too. It’s been so fun to have in the show. It is still not an easy song to sing, but it is worth trying, because it is such a great, meaningful song.

DILLON: At a show last month in Utah, your mother, Lupe, came out and joined you in a duet of “A Merry Little Christmas.” I heard she sounded good, too! Ever think about having mom go on tour with you?

DAVID: Man, I was trying to get her to come to other shows because it’s just fun having her, but she said, “Oh I’m tired … I don’t know.” She came to the San Francisco show because I was in the Bay Area after Utah, so I was able to sing with her again there. But I think she is kind of worn out. She is running around keeping track of the rest of my brothers and sisters, so I don’t blame her for being too tired to come. But I really like singing with her. I think the last time I sang with her was years ago so I was really happy to get the chance to do it again. And I let her enjoy it, too. She loves it! She is part of the reason why I love music. I would always listen to her and think “Man … I kind of want to be like my mom.” I had always wanted to be a performer like her.

DILLON: It’s funny that she is telling you that she’s busy, when most people would guess it to be the other way around.

DAVID: Oh no, it isn’t her show or anything like that. She is a mom. She said she wanted to, but she was just tired. I was trying really hard too! I said, “C’mon mom, it is close enough to home where you can come!” And she just said, “Ugh, I’m too tired.” But she is such a hard worker. It has been great that she has been home taking care of the kids and all. She treats all of her kids the same. People talk to her about me but she always tells them: “I love all my kids. They’re all great. David, Daniel, Claudia, Jazzy, Amber, they’re all awesome!”

DILLON: Well she sounds like a wonderful lady.

DAVID: I love my mother (Laughs).

DILLON: I hear you’re writing a memoir. How’s that coming?

DAVID: It has been fun because I have been able to show people more of my personality. I have gotten to talk about the things I want to talk about, things I actually normally talk about.

DILLON: Shifting gears a bit, you won a Teen Choice Award in ‘08 for “Most Fanatic Fans.”

DAVID: Oh yeah (laughs). I was surprised because the Jonas Brothers have more fanatic fans than I do. I don’t know. I don’t have as many fans as the Jonas Brothers, but the fans I have are really dedicated. I really appreciate it. They are the ones who allow me to do this. They are the ones who support me and come to the shows and enjoy the music. You just have to love and appreciate what they do. Sometimes it can get a little crazy, but all in all they are really great. And they try to be really respectful to me. I think that is really cool of them to do. They don’t hound and attack me. They just say “Hi!”

DILLON: Well what has been your craziest fan moment so far?

DAVID: Well they don’t usually pounce me, but it was weird with this one lady. She must’ve been in her 40s and I was running to a car when she just screams, “David Archuleta!” and grabs me. She wouldn’t let go of me and she kept trying to kiss my face. She just kept screaming my name, too, and I was wondering what on earth was going on. It was really awkward. No one had really tried to kiss my face like that. And I’m not a kissy person (laughs).

DILLON: You recently put out a Christmas album, you are currently touring across the country performing Christmas songs, and your birthday is three days after Christmas. It must be pretty easy for you to get into the Christmas spirit …

DAVID: Yeah, well I’ve been celebrating Christmas for five months now, so it’s been nice (laughs). I said to myself, “Okay David, it’s weird singing these songs in the summer, but there’s still meaning to them and that doesn’t ever change.” And that makes me think about what these songs mean and what they are all about. The songs are really cool and I’m just glad to sing them and make an album of them because they really mean a lot to me. It has just been a great experience.

DILLON: What are your plans for the holidays?

DAVID: I’m hoping to be home. My birthday is just three days after and it would be nice to be with the family just relaxing. It was so nice to do that last year. I had never appreciated it so much until last year, when I was almost never home. I am just happy to hang out with my family, playing video games and watching TV. It’s nice.

Maaf ya lama transkrip wawancaranya…Masih banyak kerjaan bangettt kemaren begitu balik..huhu..

Oh, ya dan maaf kalo jadinya cuman sedikit dan nggak sesuai harapan kalian. Yang jelas gw pengen ngasih tau sepanjang wawancara David sangat sangat sangat sangat nice (he’s what you see is what you get type of person….sama banget deh sama yang sering kita liat di video wawancara-wawancara dia…) dan banyak tingkah-tingkah khasnya yang mungkin kalo dilakuin orang lain bikin kita menganggap dia oon, tapi kalo dilakuin David jadi lucu. Haha… (Cerita lebih detilnya kayak yang udah dijabarin Panji sebelumnya)

Oke, deh kita mulai aja yaaa…Oh, ya maaf juga kalo terjemahannya agak-agak aneh, karena tau sendiri kan David kalo ngomong suka tiba-tiba loncat ke man-mana dan banyak sound effect (lots of giggles dan laughs fo-sho)yang nggak bisa dituangkan dalam bentuk tulisan. Hehe…Tapi semoga bisa cukup mewakilkan situasi yang terjadi waktu itu..

*David, selamat datang di Asia. Sayang kali ini kamu nggak bisa datang ke Indonesia yaaa…

Aaaaaaw (dengan nada menyesal khasnya), aku tau. Aku pengen banget datang ke Indonesia sebenarnya. Tapi …mungkin lain kali…

*Oke, sekarang pertanyaan pertama. Apa sih yang pernah kamu dengar soal Indonesia?

Hmmm, nggak banyak (jawabnya sambil ngemil kacang-kacangan gitu. Haha) Aku pernah dengar soal Jakarta. Aku juga tahu Indonesia salah satu kota, eh, negara berpenduduk terbanyak di dunia. (Pas jawab ini ngomongnya agak belibet gitu deh.Lucu bangettt!Gara-gara konsentrasi makan kacang gw rasa..:))

*Terus apa lagi yang lain?

Aduh, belum banyak orang yang cerita sama aku. Mungkin kamu bisa cerita? (Yah, dia nanya gw..Ampe ikutan belibet dah gw ngomongnya juga..haha)

*Aku rasa kamu harus datang ke Bali. Kamu suka Hawaii kan? Menurut aku Hawaii dan Bali hampir sama. Banyak pantai…(even though Hawaii is much better I guess…lol)

Oh Wow, I have to go there, then…(Ya iyaaalaahh…jelajahilah Indonesia bersama IAA, David..hoho)

*Gimana dengan artis dari Asia? Apa kamu punya favorit?Aku denger kamu suka Charice Pempengco?

Oh, ya aku pernah dengar sedikit tentangnya. Tapi yang lebih sering aku dengar, Regine Velasquez. (Pernah denger Afgan ato Vidi nggak, Vid?Haha..)

*Pertanyaan selanjutnya, dua singel kamu, Crush dan A Little Too Not Over You pernah jadi juara di lebih dari 40 stasiun radio di Indonesia. Gimana rasanya?Kaget nggak?

Oh, really? (Udah bisa nebak dong gimana ekspresinya?)Wow, that’s amazing!

Aku benar-benar nggak tau gimana respon fans di Indonesia. Aku pernah dapat beberapa surat fans sih dari Indonesia. Tapi di Amerika aku baru pernah ketemu fans dari Singapura, Malaysia, Jepang, dan Korea. Jadi, aku belum pernah ketemu orang Indonesia di sana. Makanya aku rasa akan sangat menyenangkan kalau aku bisa datang langsung karena banyak orang terus-terusan bilang aku banyak fans di Indonesia. Bagiku selalu menyenangkan tampil dan bertemu dengan fans karena mereka sudah menikmati musikku dan aku ingin memberikan mereka apresiasi. (ooow, David!You’re such a nice kid, eh, boy, eh, man!..hehe)

*Hidup setelah Idol, apakah sama dengan yang selama ini kamu bayangkan?

Hidup beda banget sekarang. Banyak orang tahu aku. Aku sama sekali nggak pernah ngebayangin orang di Asia juga kenal aku. Benar-benar gila! Ternyata di tempat yang bermil-mil jaraknya dari Amerika ada orang yang menikmati musikku. Aku juga sibuk banget sekarang. Bikin album, tur. Aku baru selesai tur solo perdanaku dua minggu lalu di Amerika. Oh, bahkan waktu tur itu aku juga nggak percaya ternyata aku punya fans di New York, atau tempat-tempat lain kayak Minnesota, atau di manapun. Haha…Ya, pokoknya intinya punya fans di berbagai negara benar-benar menakjubkan. (you’re officially a celebrity, huh?)

*Oh, ya ngomong-ngomong aku suka banget Zero Gravity.

*Ada kemungkinan nggak bakal dibikin singel atau masuk di album berikutnya?

Aku masih belum tahu. Itu semua tergantung label. Gimana mereka memandang lagu itu. Tapi mungkin respons fans sepanjang tur bisa membuat mereka berubah pikiran. Tapi ya untuk sekarang aku benar-benar belum tahu. (please, Jive! Nothing brings US down, when you’re around…It’s like Zero Gravity…Love it!)

*Oh ya, aku pengen tau dong. Hal apa sih yang nggak akan pernah kamu lakukan di depan orang lain?Nyanyi lagu jonas brothers mungkin?

Hmmm, aku nggak begitu tahu lagu Jonas Brothers sejujurnya. (But) They really nice, I guess… ((Buahaha…Dia ngomong ini dengan ekspresi serius, tapi buat gw teteup kocak) Hmm, apa ya? Menari mungkin.. I dance with my friend if i’m hyper enough…Tapi kadang-kadang aku juga menari sendirian di kamar. I dance like an idiot. Stupid of me…Haha…Aku nggak akan pernah melakukannya di depan orang…

Hmmm, aku nggak tahu. Nggak inget. Aku selalu melakukan kebodohan, jadi menurut aku itu normal. Nggak ada hal yang bikin aku malu banget. Nggak tahu, deh. Menurut aku yang harus terjadi ya terjadi aja.Yah, pokoknya aku nggak pernah merasa malu melakukan hal bodoh. I always do stupid things… Haha…(Kalo gitu stupid things FTW!)

Oke, segini dulu yaaa..

Enaknya sih cerita langsung euy, biar lebih seru…

Jadii, mari kita gathering ajah..Hehe.. Thankssssss you guysss!

Tidak lupa kami ingin mengucapkan TERIMA KASIH yg sebesar2nya untuk Sony Music Indonesia, khususnya Pak Nabil yang udah susah payah mengurusi kita selama di sana. Mulai dari sebelum meet&greet sampai showcase. Kedepannya semoga David Archuleta bisa dateng ke Indonesia secepatnya

Pas ngantri, jantung berdebar, tangan jadi basah. Pas akhirnya giliran kita, dan kita masuk ke ruangan tersebut, aku bener2 speechless.Dluvarch, histeris dan bener2 seneng bgt!Kalo aku sama skali gak bisa mengucapkan sekata pun. The first thing that comes up in mind pas liat David asli – salju, angel! Snow Angel( beda lagi doong.) hehe. Bener2 glowing bgt. Cahaya lampu kalah. Bener stunning, bening, indah! Just really gorgeous. Beneran, aku blom pernuh ngeliat orang seindah David. Saat itu, I thought to myself that I wasn’t actually there. Makanya pas David nengok ke arah aku dan adekku trus dia waved his hand trus senyum dan bilang “Oh hey guys!” Wuiiiiiw gileeeee ternyata emang beneran nyata. Bukan mimpi! Stelah kita foto bareng, we were told to exit the door karna udah giliran untuk group laen. M&Gnya kira2 berlangsung selama 1-2 menitan. Pas saat itu, aku mau ngasih David gift yg aku bawa untuk dia (T-shirt yg designnya typography dan dipenuhi dgn messages dari IAA, a bouquet of lettuce, dan a print of the design with a message on the other side of the page yg ditaro di dalam file) tapi sayangnya, aku gak bisa langsung ngasih ke dia, karna  udah giliran group selanjut. Jadi aku kasih lewat salah satu staffnya.

Pas keluar, pertama, masih kaget. It felt like there was a huge explosion of emotions inside of me. And it was pretty overwhelming. And it actually reduced me to tears. HAHA! Stelah itu, kita cari-cari tempat untuk nonton performanceya. David menyanyikan 4 buah lagu: Touch My Hand, A Little Too Not Over You, 1000 miles dan Crush. All I can say is FANTASTIC! dia nyanyinya enjoy banget dan it seems like dia menikmati every bit of it. Ketika menyanyikan 1000 miles, dia memainkan keyboardnya and everyone roared. The whole building was literally filled with cheer. Bener-bener keren!

Stelah performancenya, autograph session dimulai. Sayangnya pada saat itu, aku gak bisa ikutan karna CDku bukan sama aku. Jadi, adekku, angka, was the lucky one to get his autograph. I was really happy for her because she’s living her dream (dulu pernah maen mimpi2an, and that actually came true for her.)haha! Jadi yg line up dia. Dan aku nitip salam untuk David.

Autograph sessionnya bener2 controlled bgt, jadi smuanya bener2 berjalan dgn cepat. Tapi ketika giliran adekku, pas David mau ttd, tintanya abis, lalu dia ganti pen, dan untuk kedua kalinya, tintanya abis juga. Akhirnya pen ketiga yg dipakai David bekerja. Jadi, adekku is one of the lucky ones, because she’s one of many yg sempet berdiri di depan David lumayan lama. She said, she was mesmerized by him sampe gak tau mau ngomong apa. Katanya dia pgn minta salaman, tapi saking hypnotized by David’s beauty, dia kelupaan. Tapi untungnya, dia sempet nyampein salamku. Adekku bilang “David, you know, my sister gav you a bouquet of lettuce.” Trus katanya, David, gave that signature adorable chucke of his trus dia bilang “oh really? COOL!” Stelah itu, pas ketemu lagi sama aku, adekku bilang, she was foolish she didn’t make full use of that opportunity. Stelah itu, kita tunggu sampai acaranya selesai. Dan David pun ahirnya pergi sambil melambaikan tangannya and say “bye to everyone” bahkan sampai ke ruangan where he’d take his exit from.

Jadi, hari ini obviously isn’t like any other day, and everything wouldn’t have happened without Sony BMG Indo and IAA! And seneng juga bs ketemu para Arch Angels

So Terima Kasih banyaaak skali untuk Sony BMG Indo, Mas Nabil, kimi, DAI, IAA yg udah help make this come to life . Dan makasih banget juga untuk smua IAA yg udah berikut-serta untuk projek “T-shirt gift: To David, From IAA”.
