Rihanna Fends Off Archuleta Atop Hot 100

Rihanna begins a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Disturbia,” but barely fended off the best chart debut in more than 18 months, in the form of David Archuleta’s “Crush.” The track sold 166,000 downloads in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and opens at No. 2.

The last song to open so high was Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” in late January 2007. ”Crush” also scores the best opening by an “American Idol” finalist with a song not performed on the show.

So it’s nice to report that the artist who earns Hot Shot Debut honors on this week’s Hot 100 has an obsession with the charts. More accurately, and at the risk of self-aggrandizing, he is obsessed with my Billboard chart books. With his new single entering at No. 2, he has assured himself a place in the next edition of “Billboard’s Hottest Hot 100 Hits,” even if he has to wait a few years to see his current single listed among the top 5000 songs of the rock era.

David Archuleta is the young man whose new single, “Crush” (19/Jive), debuts at No. 2, thus becoming the highest new entry of 2008 and the highest debut ever for an “Americn Idol” song not performed on the series.

Opening at No. 2 gives Archuleta a victory over the contestant who beat him in the seventh season “Idol” competition. David Cook’s peak position to date on the Hot 100 is No. 3, the debut rank for “The Time of My Life.” While Cook could still earn his first No. 1 on the Hot 100, for now, Archuleta is the second runner-up to outperform the “Idol” winner from the same season. The first was Clay Aiken, who went to No. 1 in 2003 with “This Is the Night” while second season champ Ruben Studdard peaked at No. 2 with “Flying Without Wings.”

“Crush” is the seventh single to debut inside the top 10 of the Hot 100 in 2008, including Taylor Swift’s “Change,” which enters this week at No. 10. Here is a summary of these high-flying seven:

That is how the Billboard Hot 100 works, so we still have one day left to buy Crush on iTunes, and a few days to request it on radio stations!

For people wondering when the digital sales will be released: between 5AM – 10AM EST Wednesday morning.

The Billboard Hot 100 is also released on Wednesday (to subscribers) but it will be “leaked” and it will appear online between 5PM – 9PM EST.
